The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide What You and Your Family Need to Know (Audible Audio Edition) David J Miklowitz Kris Koscheski Tantor Audio Books

This book is saving my life. I haven't finished it yet, as I'm taking my time to really absorb everything and fill out the worksheets included. After I finish, I am encouraging my fiancee to read it (so he knows what he's getting himself into) and then my mom, so she can finally understand what I am going through. Jamison's An Unquiet Mind, in my experience, is a great read for the bipolar sufferer, as you will see that there are others out there who are going through what you are going through, but THIS book is perfect for the sufferer and his/her loved ones. It goes through the science of what is happening in the brain and genes (don't worry, Miklowitz breaks it down to be easily understood), covers the various drugs that your doctor might prescribe, treatment options, and actual steps you can take to get better! Thanks to this book, I have taken big steps in the right direction to control my moods - avoiding alcohol, keeping to a regular sleep schedule, and charting my moods to look for patterns. By the way, the mood chart recommended in this book is no longer available at the website given, but with a little Google-Fu you'll be able to find it easily. I give this book a perfect 5/7.

The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide What You and Your Family Need to Know (Audible Audio Edition) David J Miklowitz Kris Koscheski Tantor Audio Books Reviews

This is a must have for every person or family member of a person with bipolar disorder. Full of comprehensive information and told in layman's language without any 'talking down'. (for instance, I learned that a side effect of one of my medications is curly hair!) Covers both traditional and complimentary therapies.
This was bought for a friend who is very Bipolar. It has a lot advice for those are having to deal with the afflicted person. Unfortunately the person I was trying to help had additional problems and we were forced to get them professional help and institutional placement. I read the book and it was very interesting. Such a terrible disorder. If you are dealing with someone who has this problem get the book so you understand what you are dealing with and get professional help.
Very Good book. Although the author is a psychologist PhD rather than an MD who can prescribe the drugs he describes, his work is very helpful. If you are spending thousands of dollars a year on drugs and doctors for a family member suffering with bipolar disorder. $20 for this book and your time to read it cover-to-cover and make notes is totally worth your time.
I have bipolar disorder and this is the first book I read on the disease. Even in this day and age of internet and easy access to information I found this book tremendously useful. It provides both a broad picture of the disease and many details that bipolar patients face in their lives. After having read the book, I find it easier to accept my illness and I believe I will be more responsible with my life knowing better what my illness is. Some of the points from the book will also be something I will address when next seeing my doctor. I am sure having read the book and being able to use it as reference will improve my relationship with my psychiatrist and will add to my better quality of life with the disease.
If bipolar touches your life in any way (or you just want more information) I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Written by a doctor with many years experience working with bipolar patients, he covers alot of facts and theory mixed with his real-life observations and patient examples. Fascinating, informative, readable, and yet hopeful...this is an amazing resource for people suffering bipolar AND their family, friends, co-workers, etc. Being diagnosed with bipolar can be a big (and scary) life changer, this book handles the subject by offering alot of facts and information you need to know...along along compassion and hope. What could be a dry and depressing book comes across as insightful and uplifting.

I don't often read non-fiction, but this book has been the happy exception. Easy reading with oodles of information, hope, and encouragement!
Relatively short but in depth, it still took me 5 months to get through this from time of diagnosis until now. Partially periods of time willfully not wanting to deal with it, just busy, and trying to absorb it as thoroughly as possible. Outside of your family, psychologist and psychiatrist this is the place to start. Great personal examples. Great medical insight. Helpful for relationships, workplace, daily routine, coping strategies. I wish I could find printable worksheets from the book online.
This is a very useful survival guide for a person dealing with bipolar disorder who wants to look for help and for people living with someone suffering from the bipolar disorder, I wish there was a section in the book to provide strategies on how to help a person who is suffering from bipolar disorder to acknowledge their condition, the big premise of this book is that the person suffering from the disorder is aware of his or her condition, something that is not always the case due to their own stigma associated to the illness. Nevertheless this is a great guide with good insights and recommendations
