"Life is full of joy from hardship. Life is full of paradoxes." When Jessica Jondle was diagnosed with cystinosis in 1983, doctors gave her ten years to live. Her stubborn insistence that she would not only live, but THRIVE-evidenced by her desire to go roller skating despite the shadowy, washed-out appearance of her bones on x-rays-has led her to survive to see age thirty. In this uplifting and true tale of Jessica's transformative experiences with an illness that impacts every cell of her body, she explores her life-long journey and expresses her deeply held conviction that miracles exist. The impossible is, in fact, possible.

Opening the pages of a book about the life of a person with a rare disease is like tossing dice--will it be a tear jerker? Whiny? Promoting a cause? Roller Skating with Rickets surprised me page after page, in that while I shed some tears, it wasn't a tear jerker; While there were lots of things worth whining about, none of it was whiny; And rather than promoting her cause, Jessica speaks gratefulness for those who have sacrificed so much already. So what is RSWR? It's a poignant, honest, and upbeat look at what normal life is for those with a rare disease, whose lives have always revolved around the next health catastrophe about to happen (or happening), and exposes just how normal those lives are in the midst of very abnormal situations, how familiar the concerns of childhood and youth and young love. Some interesting medical info will have you googling cystinosis, and she refers to some events in the book that you will also be looking up, in order to fully understand her unique experiences. Each chapter opens with a new episode in Jessica's very full young life, and ends pondering the learning value of that particular part of her life. I had to read aloud several parts in the book to share with my husband, and he agreed that Jessica's writing is often profound and powerful.Product details
